IRELAND HOUSE

Location

Tokyo

Date

2021

An international architectural competition entry to Ireland House in Tokyo: a new embassy and business hub for the Department of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo, led by RIAI. Collaboration between Niall McLaughlin, Charles Gibault, Magdalena Skop and S+C.

A discreet street leads to a secluded garden, a central point connecting the Consulate, Offices, and Library. Enamelled glass shutters depicting vibrant nature scenes adorn doorways, catching sunlight and glowing in the rain. Mono-pitched, open-gabled structures distinguish the Consulate and Ambassador’s Residence, each with park-facing balconies, signifying a mixed-use urban quarter.

Consulate and Library visitors enter from the north, while the Event Space, featuring a double-height dining hall overlooking a birch garden, is accessed via a sweeping stair on the south. Offices above benefit from natural light and ventilation. A glazed bridge links the Consulate's upper level to other offices.

The Ambassador’s Residence above offers a reception terrace and private family accommodation. The design fosters a close-grained urban setting, integrating the embassy into city life as an open and accountable entity with nature at its core.
